Trump worked 'very hard' to get student released

Before his trial, Warmbier had said he tried to steal a propaganda banner as a trophy for an acquaintance who wanted to hang it in her church.

"Our son is coming home", Fred Warmbier said.

News of Warmbier's deteriorating health only reached USA officials in recent weeks, leading to an urgent demand that he be released on humanitarian grounds on Monday. When the Swedes finally got the okay to visit, the North Koreans immediately asked for a meeting with Joe Yun, the United States envoy in NY, when he was told about Otto Warmbier's condition.

In a tearful statement made before his trial, Mr Warmbier told a gathering of reporters in Pyongyang he was offered a used auto worth $US10,000 ($13,200) if he could get a propaganda banner and was also told that if he was detained and didn't return, $US200,000 ($265,000) would be paid to his mother in the form of a charitable donation.

Warmbier was visiting North Korea as part of a tourist group arranged by Young Pioneer Tours, a tour agency based in Xian, China. "I made the worst mistake of my life", Mr. Warmbier said. "Otto should have been released from the start".

The student's release comes the same day former National Basketball Association star Dennis Rodman visited Pyongyang for the first time in Donald Trump's presidency.

There was no immediate confirmation from USA officials of North Korea's description of his illness - including whether he was stricken with botulism, a potentially fatal disease that is caused by a toxin but is not usually associated with loss of consciousness.

This is Rodman's fifth public visit to North Korea.

- Kim Hak Song, who was detained in early May to be investigated for committing unspecified hostile acts, North Korea has said.

North Korea allowed a student from the United States who fell into a coma while imprisoned in a labour camp to be flown home on Tuesday, as Washington stepped up efforts to halt Pyongyang's nuclear programme.

The other United States citizens now being held by North Korea include Kim Hak-Song and Tony Kim, both professors at the Pyongyang University of Science and Technology.

"We're waiting to see what the news is and take the lead of his family", said Kenny.

North Korea has freed an imprisoned USA citizen from its custody, Turkey's Anadolu Agency (AA) reported Secretary of State Rex Tillerson as saying on Tuesday. He visited Warmbier with two doctors on Monday, and demanded his release on humanitarian grounds.

June 13: Warmbier is evacuated from North Korea, accompanied by a medical team and a State Department representative.

February 2017 After he was sworn in as U.S. Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson briefed President Donald Trump on the situation and Trump directed Tillerson to take all appropriate measures to secure the release of American hostages in North Korea, State Department officials said Tuesday.

Mr Warmbier was supposed to graduate from the university in May.

But Rodman said the issue of several Americans detained by North Korea is "not my objective right now". "We must continue working to free all Americans who are being held by North Korea".

During a tearful court appearance in February 2016, Warmbier apologized for his actions in North Korea.

The 56-year-old former basketball star has visited North Korea at least four times. The official, who was not authorized to publicly discuss intelligence and spoke anonymously, said there were concerns that Mr. Warmbier had died as a result of the beatings.
