Twins select SS/OF Lewis with first pick of 2017 Major League Baseball draft

The Twins had the baseball world holding its collective breath ahead of the announcement of the first pick in Monday's MLB first-year player draft.

Lewis, a right-handed batter who also hit a long home run out of Wrigley Field in a national all-star game last summer, is eager to show he can hit professional pitching. This is the first year I've ever been really into the draft, and it's pretty fun to follow along with the different mock rounds and familiarize myself with the top prospects. "We see this guy as an impact player on both sides of the ball". He was the L.A. Times' high school baseball player of the year after hitting.429 as a junior. In some respects they made Lewis a compromise selection as they sought to stretch their available $14.16 million bonus pool and maximize three picks in the first 37 spots.

Manning the hot corner and outfield channels during the early stages of his JSerra tenure, Lewis switched to shortstop full time ahead of the 2017 season. "He wants to do everything for the team".

The slot value for the Dodgers' first pick, per MLB.com, is $2,702,700, while their second-round pick has a value of $1,018,200.

Over the weekend he pitched the Cardinals into the College World Series with seven strong innings against rival Kentucky. He heads to Omaha with a career.328 average, .432 on-base percentage and a.533 slugging percentage. The Twins are expected to draft high school pitcher/shortstop Hunter Greene out of California with the first overall pick.
