Uber CEO under fire

Michael was a close confidant to CEO Travis Kalanick.

The news comes as Emil Michael, a senior vice president, is stepping down a day before the results of a far-reaching inquiry into the firm's management and workplace culture are made public.

Full view will be published shortly.

The company announced in February that it was commissioning a pair of investigations into allegations of discrimination and sexual harassment made by Susan Fowler, a former engineer at the company.

Post a traumatic accident in his family, where Uber CEO Travis Kalanick lost his mother and his father was hospitalized, he has been mulling over the need for some time-off from work.

Also at the meeting on Sunday, board members were expected to discuss Kalanick temporarily stepping away and possibly returning to a role with less authority. "We do see sometimes a startup mentality in the early years of a company's growth where they have difficulty sometimes adjusting to being a huge enterprise", said Lisa Klerman, a USC law professor and employment law mediator.

She expects Kalanick to come back as a strategist under a new CEO or possibly a board member who runs the company.

Emil Michael, senior vice president of business for Uber Technologies Inc., stands for a photograph after a Bloomberg Television interview in San Francisco, California, U.S., on Tuesday, July 29, 2014. He delivered the news in an email to the ride-sharing companies employees Monday morning, the New York Times reports.

Sources told Recode, however, that the WSJ's report was inaccurate, saying instead that Michael was under pressure to resign by Uber, rather than being fired. He said his "beliefs and approach to leadership" were "inconsistent" with those of the company.

Last week, Uber's head of its Asia-Pacific operation was sacked after he accessed the medical records of a woman who was raped in India during a Uber ride.

Last week, Uber fired 20 employees after 215 harassment complaints were reviewed by another law firm in a separate investigation. Uber has met with a torrent of controversy relating not only to its business model, but claims by staff the company is badly managed and is rife with sexism and sexual harassment.

Additionally, there is an ongoing probe into the company's business operations, and the recent admission of intentionally overcharging riders and withholding millions of drivers from NY city drivers.
