UK's May isolated ahead of Brexit talks as key aides quit

In remarks delivered at his north London constituency's election count, Corbyn said May called the election to get a new mandate and the "mandate she got was one of lost support".

With almost all votes counted, the Conservative Party is set to end up with 319 seats, according to the BBC.

The skewed media coverage had suggested that the Brexit vote had left the Labour Party in disarray as Corbyn fought of numerous challenges within his party to remove him as their leader.

If she is to succeed in delivering the end of Britain's European Union membership which 52 per cent of the British public demanded past year, she must find a way to recapture the full support of her party because she will need their votes to pass legislation preparing for and ultimately enacting the departure.

Where the center-right Conservatives had hoped to take seats from the main opposition Labour Party, the reverse happened.

"Our two parties have enjoyed a strong relationship over many years and this gives me the confidence to believe that we will be able to work together in the interests of the whole United Kingdom".

"And I don't feel like the current prime minister or, indeed, the Tory party, has any idea about what to do with Brexit at the moment".

The Conservative Party has been dependent on Irish politicians before.

When no party wins a majority, the Parliament is considered "hung." May, jolted by the electoral setback, however, remained defiant to calls for her resignation and vowed to form a minority government with the informal backing of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP). It also promised to guarantee the rights of European citizens now living in Britain, regardless of the outcome of the Brexit negotiations. When the votes came in, Parliament was divided (or "hung") with no single party holding the majority of seats.

Voters wiped out May's parliamentary majority and dealt a devastating blow to the Conservative Party in a snap election she had called to strengthen her hand in Brexit talks.

"While Theresa May is well within the political mainstream and proven to be a solid and reliable unionist, Jeremy Corbyn is beyond the pale", the leader also said.

"As I reflect on the result, I will reflect on what we need to do in the future to take the party forward", May said before adding "I obviously wanted a different result".

David Brancaccio: Conservative leader Theresa May, the prime minister - this is not an outcome she would have preferred.
