US will exit Paris climate deal

"This administration is abdicating its leadership and taking a backseat to other countries in the global fight against climate change", said Governor Cuomo. "His decision to abandon our commitment and isolate our country will have consequences that reverberate for generations", adding that "states like California are ready to show our resolve and will continue to work with our global partners to combat climate change".

Thirty mayors, three governors, more than 80 university presidents and more than 100 businesses in the United States are preparing to submit a plan to the United Nations pledging to meet the country's greenhouse gas emissions targets under the Paris Agreement. It says the agreement is a "cornerstone in the cooperation between our countries" and that they believe it offers "substantial economic opportunities". "In Pittsburgh, we've rebuilt our economy on the future and our people, not on the past".

As of Friday, 150 mayors had signed the letter, according to the Mayors National Climate Action Agenda, which circulated the document.

Trump's decision prompted Italy, France and Germany to immediately issue a joint statement stressing that the current deal - a "cornerstone in the cooperation between our countries" - can not be renegotiated.

"It was a policy decision and I think it's important that everyone recognise the United States has a terrific record on reducing our own greenhouse gas emissions", Tillerson told reporters.

Jamie Dimon, chief executive of JPMorgan Chase, also disagreed with Trump's decision. While Mike Pence may be having a tough time understanding what's going on and even what climate change is, others across America are really beginning to step up.

Referring to what he called "the latest unfortunate decisions of the new administration", Tusk said that the European Union and China had "demonstrated solidarity with future generations". The strongly worded message continues: "We deem the momentum generated in Paris in December 2015 irreversible and we firmly believe that the Paris Agreement can not be renegotiated, since it is a vital instrument for our planet, societies and economies".

A preview of this erosion could be seen in the public distancing from German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Europe's most consequential leader.

China is now the world's No. 1 energy consumer and greenhouse gas emitter, and should it combine forces with Europe it has the potential to lead the world and prevent other nations from following the U.S. down the path of inaction. But the BBC noted that May has been criticised and accused of "subservience" to Trump for not signing a joint condemnation from France, Germany, and Italy.

The prime minister's office said Japan shares the importance of the accord with those countries.

"The nations that remain in the Paris agreement will be the nations that reap the benefits in jobs and industries created".

With input from all participants, the U.S. Climate Alliance will also act as a forum to sustain and strengthen existing climate programs, promote the sharing of information and best practices, and implement new programs to reduce carbon emissions from all sectors of the economy. The former mayor is a public opponent of Trump's environmental policies. The Paris climate deal represents a moral solution to the emerging challenges posed by gross overexploitation of the planet's resources in the past.

"Republicans and Democrats alike recognize that the Paris Agreement is about so much more than climate change", Raimondo said.
