USA environment chief exits G7 climate talks early

"Positions over the Paris accord are far apart. and will remain like that", Galletti said on the sidelines of a meeting of G7 environment ministers from the United States, Canada, Japan, France, Germany, Italy and Britain.

As a result, the US said it would not join those sections of the communique on climate and multilateral development banks.

French minister Nicolas Hulot said U.S. allies were determined not to let Trump's controversial climate stance "poison" cooperation on other ecological issues, and said the world could work around the United States position, even though it is a damaging one. By leaving the accord he will worsen global warming.

The 2015 accord, backed by almost 200 countries, aims to limit global warming to 2 degrees or less by 2100, mainly through pledges to cut carbon dioxide and emissions.

American experts have warned that US withdrawal from the Paris climate accord will pose a big threat to public health. He has said the US could try to re-enter the deal under more favorable terms, but the European Union - and in particular Italy, France and Germany - have said the Paris accord cannot be renegotiated.

While acknowledging that Trump's ending of U.S. financing for developing countries affected by climate change was an important setback, he said France and other countries were looking at ways of compensating through multilateral development banks.

In fact, the final text doesn't say the Paris accord is the only tool for tackling climate change.

In a statement on Monday, he defended the US position.

Trump has said the Paris accord would undermine the US economy, cost jobs, and put the country at a permanent disadvantage compared with its competitors. Rather, it says that the accord is "the global instrument for effectively and urgently tackling climate change and adapting to its effects".

Greenpeace's Jennifer Morgan, said: "Paris is non-negotiable and the leadership shown by the G6 countries, along with the cities, states and businesses in the U.S. in moving the agreement forward swiftly is fundamental".

"Let us make sure that Europe takes its part in this economic opportunity", he said.
