World leaders push back after Trump withdraws from climate pact

The earliest possible date for America's official withdrawal from the Paris agreement is November 4, 2020 - the day after the next USA presidential election - although Trump's current term in office is not due to end until January 20, 2021.

Tesla Inc CEO Elon Musk and Walt Disney CEO Robert Iger said they would leave White House advisory councils after Trump's move.

But the White House had to have known it was going to get that question.

"Americans will honor and fulfill the Paris Agreement by leading from the bottom up", Bloomberg said. He said the accord was not tough on India and China, and alleged that the deal was negotiated "poorly" by the Obama administration and signed out of "desperation". While I trust that this administration will be proved wrong by history, for now we must guard the USA national interest and try to restore our involvement in a crucial accord.

"On a broader economic scale, withdrawal and non-compliance and scaling back of subsidies may result in a missed opportunity for the United States to lead the charge", on renewable energy technology, said Ms Hioureas.

The Paris accord is meant to limit the global rise in temperature attributed to emissions.

A number of figures from USA industry expressed their dismay at Trump's move.

India's environment minister Harsh Vardhan also said his country is committed to the Paris accord "irrespective" of the position of other nations.

That process is what gave Mr Trump the authority to withdraw from the deal, but the United States will still need to go through a formal four year withdrawal process as outlined in the agreement text.

He said under the Paris deal, developed countries agreed to set economy-wide reductions in greenhouse gas emissions while developing countries "should continue enhancing their mitigation efforts" with the aim of achieving economy-wide absolute reductions eventually.

While UN officials stress that it could take several years before there is a proper understanding of the implications of a U.S. withdrawal, they also say the deal was structured to require action at multiple levels of government, not just federal.

Here's a breakdown of just some of the mayors' responses to the president's decision.

The bipartisan US Conference of Mayors (USCM) said in a statement that "mayors have vowed their continued commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to alleviate the impacts of global warming despite what happens at the national level". "Industry must now lead and not depend on government". The decision has no direct impact on major US regulations on power plants and vehicle rules now aimed at reducing carbon emissions, although those are now under review by Trump as well. But House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi of California called it "a stunning abdication of American leadership and a grave threat to our planet's future". After all, we're the United States.

China and the European Union are two of the three biggest economies in the world with a large carbon footprint. Beijing, however, has reaffirmed its commitment to meeting its targets under the Paris accord, recently canceling construction of about 100 coal-fired power plants and investing billions in massive wind and solar projects.
