Breast cancer survivor Christina Applegate says she had ovaries removed

Nine years later, she revealed that she has taken another major step toward cancer prevention and had her ovaries and fallopian tubes removed as well.

On top of caring for herself and her family, Applegate chose to help other women by founding Right Action for Women, which, according to its website, "provides assistance to women who are at increased risk for breast cancer and do not have insurance or the financial flexibility to cover the high costs associated with breast screenings".

Applegate noted that her cousin passed away from ovarian cancer, so she wanted to remove her ovaries to eliminate any risk.

Applegate sees her oncologist every six months for a checkup, and encourages women to see their doctors and start getting mammograms as soon as possible.

Nearly nine years after undergoing a double mastectomy following a breast cancer diagnosis, the "Anchorman" actress is speaking out about the next steps she's taken to ward off the disease. She is also a vegetarian and said she had reduced her stress.

"You're the first person I'm telling this", says Applegate in the candid interview. "It's a relief. That's one thing off the table". "Now, let's hope that I won't be knocked down by a bus", joked the former star of the series Married with children. That's her choice. That's how she eats. "Be a little more diligent and carve out as much of the bad stuff that you can", she added. "We're living in a weird time".

"The chances that my daughter is BCRA positive are very high", she explained. Breathe deeper. That's a big one for me. "I'm not anymore. I try to find the lining in everything in life". "To me it breaks the heart to think that there is a possibility for it to be affected", she concluded. Still, she decided on the double mastectomy to avoid having to go through the procedure again.

"We're at this place where we need to sit down and figure out the future of what it is that we're doing and get into more of the BRCA tests for women", she said. "If you do know you have the gene, it gives you an empowerment about your lifestyle".
