Charlottesville Revisited: White Nationalists Hold New Torch-Lit Protest

White nationalist groups marched with torches through the University of Virginia campus in Charlottesville on August 11.

The rally drew condemnation from Charlottesville Mayor Mike Signer and Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe.

"Hello Charlottesville, we're back and we're going to keep coming back".

A local television station reported that a few dozen white nationalists began their new protest at 7.45pm and left just 15 minutes later. Spencer posted a video on Twitter showing the protest, in which opponents of the removal of the statue chanted "You will not replace us" and "We will be back".

Specifically, Bellamy said he wanted the Charlottesville Commonwealth's Attorney Dave Chapman to prosecute the mob of racists led by notorious white supremacist Richard Spencer under a Virginia law that bans people intending to intimidate a another person or a group from burning objects in public places in a way that tends to put another person "in reasonable fear or apprehension of death or bodily injury".

On Saturday, the protesters gathered at Emancipation Park near a statue of the Confederate general Robert E Lee.

"The South will rise again".

'Another despicable visit by neo-Nazi cowards, ' he wrote.

An August rally organized by white nationalists to protest the planned removal of the Lee statue turned deadly when counter-protester Heather Heyer, 32, was killed by someone driving a vehicle into the crowd.

In related news, a local NBC affiliate called Spencer's march a gathering of "white activists" which spurred the ire of Twitter, especially in light of the government saying that the Federal Bureau of Investigation is on the lookout for "Black Identity Extremists".

Spokesmen and officials with the Charlottesville police department did not immediately respond to requests for comment Saturday night.

Earlier this month Heyer's mother, Susan Bro, told the Guardian she was proud of her daughter's actions. Spencer and his group then left the park, boarded a tour bus at another location and left the City of Charlottesville.

Charlottesville was rocked by violence almost two months ago during clashes between white supremacists and counterprotesters.

Students said they had requested that a mass text alert be sent out when the university learned of potentially violent events, but did not receive one on August 11.
