Croc believed to have taken missing dementia sufferer

CLOTHES and "biological matter" believed to be human remains have been found beside an isolated Port Douglas creek where it is feared Anne Cameron may have been taken by a crocodile.

"Because of the proximity of these items and this unknown material located by this creek bank we can not rule out a croc attack", he said.

Forensic testing is being carried out on the remains to determine if they are human.

Anne Cameron, 79, was reported missing from an aged care facility near Port Douglas, north of Cairns, on Tuesday.

Anne Cameron went missing from her aged care facility near a Port Douglas creek, with police finding a walking stick and clothing nearby.

The Cairns Post reported that the items were found early on Friday morning and that police were continuing their search for Cameron, who only moved to the home two months ago after relocating from Canberra, in the Four Mile Beach area, but that they held grave concerns for her safety.

Authorities are hunting a crocodile suspected to have snatched an elderly woman at a creek in northern Australia.

He said Department of Environment and Heritage Protection officers would patrol the area tonight "in the event that there has been a croc involved in this missing person".

"In north Queensland we face the risk and sometimes the ultimate price because governments are weak on this issue", Australian MP Robbie Katter said Thursday while urging the state government to support the proposal for stricter crocodile management.

The 79-year-old, who has Alzheimer's disease, was last seen before she left her OzCare aged care facility to take a walk on Tuesday afternoon.

Surveillance will be conducted on water and on foot.

"She didn't appear to be anxious about anything", she said.

"I was very shocked, we got along quite well even though we'd only known each other a few days", she said.
