Hannah Mouncey Issues Statement About Her Rejection From The AFLW Draft

The Australian Football League Tuesday ruled a transgender player ineligible for the upcoming elite women's season due to the advantage her physical strength and stamina would have over opponents.

In assessing Mouncey's bid, it appears the AFL is not prepared to be rushed into a concrete decision on the matter and said that league staff considered relevant information including "the available data on transgender strength, stamina, physique along with the specific nature of the AFLW competition".

The provisional decision comes after 27-year-old Mouncey, a former national men's handball player who underwent hormone treatment after the Rio Olympics, played recently in Canberra's Ainslie Tricolours in the local AFL Women's competition - where she was deemed eligible to play.

It is understood an AFL sub-committee rejected her draft nomination based on an exception in the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission's guidelines "Trans and gender diverse inclusion in sport - complying with the Equal Opportunity Act 2010".

The 190cm, 100kg ruck played eight games for Ainslie in Canberra's women's competition this season and kicked 17 goals - but AFLW clubs are still unsure if they will be able to recruit her through the AFLW draft.

Mouncey did not release a statement in response to the AFL's decision.

"I think they will allow her to play".

Female footballers take part in the second two-kilometre time trial run during the AFLW Draft Combine at Etihad Stadium on October 4.

Mouncey said she was "extremely disappointed" with the decision but grateful to be given the green light to continue playing in the Canberra competition.

The AFL's general manager of inclusion and social policy, Tanya Hosch, thanked Mouncey for her understanding in going through the process. "Every case will be decided on its own merits along with the individual circumstances of each future nominee", Hosch says.

"Probably the biggest person in all of this is Hannah herself, so from her point of view, we've got to be mindful of all of that".

However, the AFL Players Association accused the AFL of lacking "clear guidelines" for transgender players.

"She's just played a season in Canberra so I can't see why anything should change at the elite level. We recognise that participating in sport has physical, psychological and social benefits and we are committed to making Australian football on every level welcoming to all in our community".

"She's been part of all the discussions and all the decision-making around it, so I'm quite comfortable with where that now sits and how that's been worked through".

The AFL follows International Olympic Committee regulations which state an athlete must prove their testosterone level is below 10 nanomoles per litre - Mouncey's latest reading was 0.5 nanomoles per litre.

It is understood Mouncey meets those requirements.
