Maryam Nawaz, Captain Safdar appear before court once again

The court declared Hussain and Hassan absconders after their perpetual absence from proceedings.

The anti-graft body NAB had frozen the bank accounts and seized properties of Sharif and his family members to put pressure on them to appear before the court.

Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif's daughter and son-in-law, Maryam Nawaz and Captain (retd) Safdar, arrived at the accountability court on Friday for the hearing of the three graft cases against the Sharif family.

While speaking to the media on her way out of the court Maryam Nawaz asked the interior ministry to come up with a strategy to keep such events from occurring in the future.

The court during the hearing on 9 October chose to separate the trial of Sharif's sons Hussain and Hassan from Sharif, his daughter and son-in-law.

The court was expected to indict Nawaz Sharif's daughter and son-in-law.

In the notice, both the respondents have been directed to appear before the court within 30 days.

The PML-N has not given a specific time frame for the return of Sharif. The judge ordered the NAB authorities to release Capt. Safdar after he too submitted surety bonds worth Rs. 5 million. The court also asked him to seek its permission before going overseas and rejected the NAB request to confiscate his passport.

TV footages showed that Maryam and Safdar were present inside the court when lawyers created ruckus. "It should have been avoided", she said.

She also criticised the judges for disqualifying her father in the Panama Papers case. "The judges would have to answer it", she said referring to dismissal of Sharif for non-declaration of his salary from his son's company in the UAE. The court accepted the plea. Despite issuing non-bailable arrest warrants against the duo during the last hearing, the brothers did not appear for the hearing on Monday.

Sharif was re-elected as the president of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz on October 3 and immediately demanded that those who disqualified him should respect the people's mandate and democracy.
