Microsoft Exec Says Windows 10 Mobile Hardware Is No Longer A Focus

Joe Belfiore, the Corporate vice president of Windows 10 and head of Microsoft's "PC-Tablet-Phone" division, said that although Windows on mobile would continue to be supported through bug fixes, security patches etc. - mostly for the benefit of enterprise customers who still use the platform - building new features and hardware wasn't a priority. However, Microsoft is not planning to bring any new consumer-facing features to Windows 10 Mobile, nor is it planning to release any new hardware.

A shortage of apps has always been a problem for Windows Phone and was the biggest reason why it never managed to seriously challenge Android and iOS.

Questioned on the lack of applications for Windows 10 Mobile, he answered that Microsoft had tried very hard to incentivise developers to build apps for Windows 10 Mobile, but that companies were unwilling to invest due to the low volume of users.

It also chose to drop the company's mantra "mobile-first, cloud-first".

Belfiore's tweet solidified what Terry Myerson, executive VP of Microsoft's Windows and Devices group, said in an interview with The Verge in March 2016: The Windows mobile platform simply isn't Microsoft's focus now.

"There wasn't a wide range of devices running Windows 10 Mobile, so it wasn't attractive to retailers or operators."
Windows Mobile had a 0.3 per cent global market share at the end of 2016, according to Gartner.

On Thursday, Google researcher Mateusz Jurczyk published an analysis on the Project Zero blog describing how Microsoft's handling of Windows updates leaves users of some versions more vulnerable to security risks.

In March, Facebook deserted Windows Phones.

Microsoft started gutting its phone business a year ago, making thousands of job cuts. Although Windows 10 is the last version of the Windows operating, the older versions of Windows 10 will be soon no longer supported. Microsoft tried something different with Windows Phone, but it wasn't enough. That being said, even the company founder Bill Gates has moved to an Android smartphone.
