Navy relieves of duties top officers of wrecked USA warship

The McCain's captain, Commander A. Sanchez, and his executive officer, Commander J. Sanchez, were reassigned to other duties in Japan, where the Seventh Fleet is headquartered, the Navy said.

The warship collided with the Alnic MC tanker near Singapore, killing 10 USA sailors and injuring five others.

The collision of the USS John S.McCain guided missile destroyer with a merchant ship near Singapore in August that killed 10 sailors was preventable, the U.S. Navy said after it relieved the warship's commander and his deputy from their duties.

Fox News reported that while the investigation into the collision was still ongoing, preliminary findings showed the collision was "preventable", and that the commanding officer exercised poor judgment.

Admiral Swift said the collisions involving US Navy ships can not be viewed in isolation and that it was the organisation's goal to find out whether there is a common cause underlying the uptick. It was one of several accidents in the region that raised concern over the safety and operational effectiveness of United States naval vessels. Admiral Scott Smith announced his retirement from Command of the Pacific Fleet because of the two incidents.

The McCain's sister ship, the Fitzgerald, nearly sank off the coast of Japan in June after colliding with a Philippine container ship. In January, the USS Antietam ran aground near the US' Yokosuka naval base in Japan, and in May the USS Lake Champlain had a minor collision with a South Korean fishing boat east of the Korean peninsula. Navy officials concluded that the damage sustained by the McCain could be repaired in Japan which will allow sailors assigned to the ship and their families to stay nearby and not relocate to a stateside fix site.

The destroyer will be repaired at Yokosuka naval base, near Tokyo, home of the McCain and other ships of the USA 7th Fleet.
