Qualcomm wants Apple to stop production and sales of iPhones in China

According to Bloomberg, Qualcomm has now filed lawsuits in China with the intent to ban both the sale and manufacture of iPhones in the country. "Apple employs technologies invented by Qualcomm without paying for them", a Qualcomm spokesperson told Bloomberg. Qualcomm's suit says that Apple infringed on a trio of patents covering Force Touch and power management. "Qualcomm filed the suits in a Beijing intellectual property court claiming patent infringement and seeking injunctive relief, according to Christine Trimble, a company spokeswoman". "In our many years of ongoing negotiations with Qualcomm, these patents have never been discussed and in fact were only granted in the last few months", an Apple spokesperson said. Rosenstock believes that "like [Qualcomm's] other courtroom maneuvers. this latest legal effort will fail".

If Qualcomm were to succeed, Apple's ability to quickly assemble iPhones would be gutted, while sales of iPhone devices would take a heavy hit. The deal now in place still requires that Apple pay a fee regardless of whether the phone includes a Qualcomm chip, though.

Cupertino's legal team sued Qualcomm for $1 billion claiming that the company's patent licensing practices abused its position as the world's leader chipmaker.

It seems exceedingly unlikely that sales of any iPhones will be banned.

Qualcomm's been in hot water ever since the beginning of 2017 when Apple issued an antitrust lawsuit against the company, and the battle between the two has been playing out ever since. It's been repeatedly fined for similar behaviors, with the latest ruling coming down yesterday, when it was fined $774 million by Taiwan's Fair Trade Commission.
