Richard Branson's Virgin Group invests in Hyperloop One

It would be great wouldn't it?

High-speed transportation company Hyperloop One, which landed $85 million in additional funding last month, revealed today that it has gained a new board member in business magnate Richard Branson, whose Virgin group was secretly responsible for an unnamed portion of that funding.

The Hyperloop will work by loading passengers and cargo into a pod and accelerating gradually via electric propulsion through a low-pressure tube.

Its tracks use magnetic levitation and the pod glides at airline speeds for long distances.

In a blog announcing the investment, Branson said: 'Ever since our creation, Virgin has been known for disruption and investing in innovative companies.

'From our airlines to our trains to our spaceline, we have always been passionate about innovation in transport too, especially the development of technology that could transform people's lives. This is just the latest example.

An important point about Virgin Hyperloop One is that it will be all-electric and will be built as a sustainable form of transport.

Shervin Pishevar, co-founder and executive chairman of Hyperloop One, said the partnership "feels like a natural fit".

The Hyperloop is a nascent transportation system that works by shooting pods through a vacuumed-sealed tube at speeds that experts say could reach 700 miles per hour.

During it second phase of testing, Hyperloop was able to reach speeds of 192 miles/hour (310 kilometres/hour) - although it was only able to maintain this for 10.6 seconds.

The maximum distance travelled was 436m, with a peak acceleration of 1.48G (0-100km/h in 1.85 seconds).

"After visiting Hyperloop One's test site in Nevada and meeting its leadership team this past summer, I am convinced this groundbreaking technology will change transportation as we know it and dramatically cut journey times", Virgin Group founder Richard Branson said in a press release.
