Rishard Matthews will leave NFL if told to stand for national anthem

A native of Jackson, Miss.

The wide receiver was originally responding to reports of the NFL making it mandatory to stand for the national anthem.

Earlier this week NFL commissioner Roger Goodell sent out a memo to the league's owners with regards to player protests during the national anthem, with some interpreting the memo as a sign that the league would put into place a rule that would require all players to stand. Matthews previously refrained from protesting in respect of his brother, but after Trump's comments, he said his brother would understand his intentions going forward. "The players jointly decided this was the best course of action".

The reaction to the memo was such at the National Football League and NFLPA issued a joint statement, with some members of the union due to be present at next week's owners meetings. In the three games since, the Titans collectively stayed in the locker room once, and Matthews stayed in the locker room until after the national anthem twice. Should be really interesting to if he ends up following through on his threat or not.

Last month, Matthews pledged to donate $75,000 to organizations that support oppressed communities. The receiver explained he didn't want his protest seen as a "publicity stunt". This is a movement that started as a protest against the prejudice and oppression many minorities in America face - especially as it relates to police brutality. They tried to have a silent protest, and look what happened. This is the kind of thing you would expect to find in totalitarian nations, but not in a free state.
