Royal Mail wins High court injunction preventing strike action

Royal Mail's application for an injunction to stop the planned industrial action by members of the Communications Workers Union (CWU) is set to be heard in court this morning. Staff were also considering action during the Black Friday retail sales event next month or during the festive season.

Royal Mail, which was privatised in 2013, is trying to modernise after years of underinvestment and has reduced layers of management, upgraded technology and cut its property bill.

The injunction, Royal Mail claims, is necessary to prevent hundreds of thousands of people across the United Kingdom being deliberately inconvenienced as well as the company suffering commercially.

The CWU has said that Royal Mail's move to reform workers' pensions means that its members will lose up to a third of their retirement entitlements.

Last week, 89% of the CWU's 111,000 workers backed a walkout in a dispute over pensions, pay and jobs, with 74% of members turning out to vote. The last mass industrial action among postal workers was in 2009. It subsequently filed an injunction on Monday with the High Court.

"We will now make contact with the CWU as a matter of urgency to begin the process of external mediation".

Royal Mail said the strike would be "unlawful" if the CWU did not follow dispute resolution procedures.

"We want an agreement and will comply with the injunction to undertake further external mediation". The judged ruled that pressing ahead with the strike without following the dispute resolution procedures, which include involving an external party to mediate on talks, would be unlawful. "The first step is selecting a mediator acceptable to Royal Mail and the CWU from a panel that was agreed by both parties", he said.
