Southwest Airlines will soon fly to Hawaii

And with a major carrier adding flights to Hawaii in 2018, this may be a good time to start.

Southwest Chairman and CEO Gary Kelly said the announcement was "long-awaited by our customers, fans and more than 55,000 of the world's most-loved airline employees". "We're ready and excited to address a request we've heard for years", said Kelly. The carrier announced it will embark on a process to obtain approval from the Federal Aviation Administration for Extended Operations (ETOPS), a regulatory requirement to operate between the mainland and the Hawaiian islands.

"The launch of our ETOPS work begins the next chapter of Southwest Airlines".

Southwest Airlines is expanding its service to Hawaii.

Southwest Chief Revenue Officer Andrew Watterson, who worked for Hawaiian Airlines as vice president of planning and revenue management from 2011-2013, told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser that the company was purposely ambiguous about when flights would begin to and from Hawaii because that will depend on when ETOPS authorization is received.

The low-fare airline has been unable to reach the island state until now because it was beyond the reach of the Boeing 737 jets that has made up its fleet.

I just shared with our Employees at our Spirit Party at Universal Studios: we're going to Hawaii, baby!

A study published by the business school at the University of Virginia earlier this year found that of 109 markets in which Southwest started service between 2012 and 2015, fares fell by an average of 15%, with almost a third of the routes enjoying a drop of more than 20%. It's not yet known which airports will offer direct nonstop service to Hawaii. Those Southwest shockwaves of our terrific value and bar-setting Customer Service will be a game-changing addition in the US transpacific market.

"We wouldn't be so bold as to say we'll start flying in October or November or July of 2018 and not go through the FAA process", Watterson said.

"Hawaii is an important place for Southwest Airlines because so many people count on us to take them everywhere they want to go reliably and affordably".
