UAE to Stop Issuing Visas to N.Koreans

The UAE announced it will terminate the missions of North Korea's non-resident ambassador and its own envoy to Pyongyang.

It also said the UAE will no longer issue new visas or corporate licenses to North Korean citizens.

In a statement, the ministry said that it looked forward to cooperating with the global community to counter North Korea's nuclear and missile programs, which threaten worldwide security and stability.

The United States on Thursday welcomed the United Arab Emirates' decision to break ties with North Korea over its nuclear weapons program.

Kuwait has North Korea's only embassy in the Gulf region. North Korean laborers working overseas are one of the major sources of foreign currency for Pyongyang.

The 2 nations say money earned by North Korean migrant workers is allowing Pyongyang to continue its nuclear and missile programs.

Qatar, which is hosting the 2022 World Cup, said last month it was in full compliance with all United Nations sanctions and that it had stopped issuing visas to North Korean nationals following the previous round of sanctions in 2015.

South Korea and Japan reportedly have been pressuring the Middle Eastern countries to ban North Korean workers, whose income remittances directly benefit the regime of Kim Jong-un.

"Approximately 1,000 remain, but this number will decline rapidly as their employment contracts expire".
