Australia qualifies for World Cup with 3-1 win over Honduras

Australia beat Honduras 3-1 in the second leg of their intercontinental playoff on Wednesday to qualify for next year's World Cup in Russian Federation.

"It's a bit hard to describe, it's unreal", Jedinak said in a post-match interview.

"It's been a tough two-and-a-half years to get to this point but we did it". Postecolgou became the first Australian to steer his country to a World Cup, even if doubts linger as to whether he'll take the team there.

A hat-trick from captain Mile Jedinak in front of 77,060 fans at Stadium Australia was enough to see the Socceroos through, but it was not as straightforward as the score-line suggests.

Tim Cahill, who missed that match with an ankle injury, started as a lone striker but his team mates were unable to present him with any clear-cut chances to notch up his 51st worldwide goal. Tom Rogic wasted the best chance during that period, scuffing a first-time left-foot shot into the arms of Donis Escober after Aziz Behich had combined brilliantly with Tim Cahill before cutting the ball back.

Australia make the breakthrough eight minutes into the second half when Jedinak's free-kick from just outside the penalty area took a massive deflection off substitute Henry Figueroa to beat a wrong-footed Escober.

Rogic atoned for this miss nine minutes into the second half, though, with a thrilling solo run that brought Australia a free-kick on the edge of Honduras's box. - Socceroos skipper Mile Jedinak.

Australia, however, remained on the offensive as Cahill's looping header dropped onto the crossbar.

Again, it was from the spot after a clear foul by Jerry Palacios on Robbie Kruse, with Jedinak outfoxing Escober on this occasion with a penalty drilled straight down the middle.

Elis completed the scoring when he prodded home from close range following a goal-mouth scramble from a Honduras corner.
