Can iPhone X's Face ID get fooled by a face mask?

Can iPhone X's Face ID get fooled by a face mask?

Apple's launch of iPhone X in India is one of the most awaited events for the company in India, as the recently launched iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus is said to not meet the expected demands and people still awaits for the upgrade for the iPhone X. The FaceID feature is one of the main reasons behind the struggles that Apple faces with the lag in productions. According to a report by Bloomberg, Apple has lowered the bar for the iPhone X's 3D sensor system which is used to unlock the phone, authorize payments and augment photos, just a week before the handset release next week. The security firm created a mask with a 3D-printed frame, which was then filled in with hand-crafted "skin" and other 3D-printed parts. The team did not strive for a life-like mask but built its mask with the aim of tricking the Face ID's depth-mapping technology. The mask also features a silicone nose and 2D images for some components such as the eyes. The mask actually seems to work, as you can see from the clip below. They also claim that it cost them roughly $150 in supplies (excluding the 3D printer).

A week after the iPhone X officially went on sale, the Vietnamese company Bkav have proven that facial recognition is not an effective security measure. Bkav admits that the project is too far from practical for average iPhone X users to be anxious about, as it's unlikely someone is going to go to these lengths to look at some private photos or email.

A leading cyber security firm has created a mask of the human face, which responded to the Face ID feature and unlock the smartphone. However, this should concern high-value individuals like politicians and businessmen.

If the Apple does adopt this new iPhone X-like design, the new iPad Pro could feature a 10.5-inch or 12.9-inch screen in a much smaller form factor.

Moreover, the whole experiment was conducted to show that biometric sign-ins are just about convenience and not completely foolproof.
