Chelsea legend Didier Drogba confirms retirement plans

Chelsea legend Didier Drogba confirms retirement plans

We've been flooded with some of the greatest players of our generation calling time on their careers and announcing their retirement of late.

Phoenix Rising played their last game in the USL play-offs this year in October, so there is still some time for Drogba to bang home a few more goals.

Drogba, 39, is now plying his trade for Phoenix Rising in America's USL where he also owns a stake in the club, and reveals this season will be his last as a professional footballer.

Lampard, Terry and Drogba enjoyed a trophy-laden career at Stamford Bridge and led the side to their first Uefa Champions League triumph in 2012.

Drogba, who turns 40 in March, told RMC Sport: "Ah, do you want a scoop?"

After almost four months out of the game he signed for Phoenix last term and scored ten goals in 14 appearances.

He added, "At some point you have to stop".

The 39-year-old powerhouse made over 380 appearances for Chelsea over two stints, scoring 157 goals.

Since leaving Chelsea, Drogba has had brief spells with Shanghai Shenhua, Galatasaray, Montreal Impact and is now with Rising FC.

"Now, was I part of the project when I wanted to come back?" Playing is good, but at 39, it slows me down a bit, "said Drogba, who hopes to join a Major League Soccer franchise by 2020 as a manager or coach".
