Colorado girl suing US Attorney General to legalize medical marijuana nationwide

"I would like to be able to visit my grandparents without risking being taken to a foster home", Alexis said.

Alexis, whose family moved to Colorado from Texas to take advantage of the state's legalization of recreational and medical marijuana, had been suffering since she was 7 from a form of epilepsy that can not be safely controlled with FDA-approved treatments and procedures, the lawsuit says.

Medical marijuana activist, user, and legalization poster child Alexis Bortell has filed a lawsuit against U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions regarding medical marijuana legalization. Two drops of THC per day kept the seizures at bay.

"I'd say it's a lot better than brain surgery", said Bortell. It's not compassionate either, but rationality?

Whether she's successful in suing Sessions or not, Alexis is just hoping to spread awareness and be looked at like everyone else.

Alexis says she hopes the lawsuit will normalize medical marijuana as well. He showed the Problem Solvers his backyard fields, where he grows five acres of marijuana plants used to derive the very medicine that helps his daughter and patients he's never met.

Bortell's father, Dean, criticized the federal ban as "outrageous".

"When you look at it from a distance and you see it saving their lives, me as a father and an American, I go, what are we doing?"

"Our policy is the same, really, fundamentally as the Holder-Lynch policy, which is that the federal law remains in effect and a state can legalize marijuana for its law enforcement purposes but it still remains illegal with regard to federal purposes", Sessions said, referring to his predecessors as attorney general during the Obama administration. The lawsuit argues that all Americans that require Cannabis treatment for several illnesses should have it available, in a safe and legal way to obtain.

The Bortell's attorney, Michael Hiller, gave a statement regarding bringing down the Controlled Substances Act, which normally restricts the use of classified "drugs".

Bortell has been suffering with seizures since she was 7-years-old.

"We now live in an era where 62 percent of Americans live in a state where the medical use of cannabis is legal at the state level", he said.

A court struck down the federal government's first motion to dismiss the case, clearing the way for the suit to continue. Joining her on the lawsuit, NBC reports, are fellow cannabis users Marvin Washington, a former National Football League lineman; Jose Belen, a veteran of the Army; and Jagger Cotte, a 6-year-old boy who has Leigh syndrome.
