But the Bollywood actress remains unfazed by the controversy, saying the protests across India against her upcoming film Padmavati have just left her feeling "angry".

Reacting to the threats she has received from a few people, Deepika said, "Well, at this point, as a woman, an artiste and a citizen of this country I feel angry, I feel let down and I also find it amusing". "Fear is not an emotion I have ever identified with".

There are now growing security concerns for Padukone, one of India's biggest stars, who plays Rajput queen Padmavati in the film, based on a 16th century Sufi poem.

Historians, however, are divided on whether Rani Padmavati existed.

The synopsis of the film reads: "When Alauddin Khilji, the second ruler of the Khilji dynasty, hears of Rani Padmini's beauty, he becomes desperate to catch a glimpse of her". When the kingdom was sacked by Khilji, the then ruler of Delhi, the courageous queen had committed ritual suicide, or Jauhar, by jumping into a burning fire to escape rape and slavery.

It began when members of the Rajput Karni Sena, a warrior caste group, claimed that the film was a "distortion of history" that depicted the queen in an unflattering light by showing love scenes between her and a Muslim king, and by showing her dancing for an audience, an activity that would have been beneath her royal status.

Reacting to a threat by media cell coordinator of Haryana unit of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Suraj Pal Ammu, who allegedly offered to reward Rs 10 crore to anyone who would "behead" Deepika, the Chief Minister said the state government would provide security to her and her family in Bengaluru.

"Want to congratulate (the) Meerut youth for announcing Rs 5 crore bounty for beheading Deepika, Bhansali".

The politician followed up his comments with fresh threats during a subsequent interview.

"Trailers of the movie are being shown on television and cinema halls".

Director Bhansali said: 'We have made this film very responsibly, keeping in mind the Rajput dignity and respect.

The movie presented by Viacom 18 Motion Pictures and Bhansali Productions, is scheduled to release this year on December 1, 2017. The makers of the film are reportedly eyeing a February release now.
