EA acquires Respawn Entertainment, studio responsible for 'Titanfall'

One of the most respected studios in the gaming industry at the moment is Respawn Entertainment. Well, EA appears to want to rectify that mistake by officially bringing Respawn under its wing.

It was revealed that Respawn Entertainment is actually already working on a new Titanfall game, though details on it are scarce at this point.

With a move that nobody saw coming, EA announced that they had bought Respawn Entertainment on November 9th for a whopping $455 million. The additional consideration is limited to a maximum of $140 million.

"EA will provide us with more resources, access to new technologies, and expertise that we can tap into to that will help us make better games, and Respawn will retain the same creative freedom and culture we've always had", he added. There is now no word on when this new entry into the Titanfall franchise is set to release but it is good to know that this acquisition by EA has not now affected development of the new game. Visceral Games is the studio behind the current "Star Wars" game in development and other popular video games such as "Dead Space" and "Battlefield Hardline".

Historically, tying bonuses to Metacritic scores has not turned out so well for some development studios in the past.

What's probably most disheartening about the news is that Respawn didn't just have EA to choose from according to the Kotaku report; there was another offer from Nexon, the South Korean publisher known for producing free-to-play games and the publisher of the Titanfall mobile title. "We intend to deliver to our fans everything and more than we did in the past".

Respawn Entertainment was formed in 2010 by two of the creators of Call Of Duty, who left Activision under acrimonious circumstances and created the Titanfall series as a direct competitor to Call Of Duty.

"EA has been a great partner over the years with "Titanfall" and 'Titanfall 2, ' and we're excited to combine our strengths", Zampella said in a prepared statement.
