ESPN is bringing its famous SportsCenter to Snapchat

The launch will make SportsCenter the first-ever daily sports show on Snapchat's platform.

The hosting crew includes Katie Nolan, Elle Duncan, Cassidy Hubbarth, Jason Fitz, and Cy Amundson - who will take it turns to the latest sports news, highlights, and commentary to a Snapchat audience.

ESPN is launching a new version of its iconic "SportsCenter" show on Snapchat.

"SportsCenter on Snapchat provides a creative new format and platform for our flagship franchise to continue to evolve", Connor Schell, ESPN executive vice president, content, told Deadline.

Snapchat launched Shows on its Discover platform one year ago, and has since been working with leading TV networks and entertainment studios to bring premium mobile TV-like content to Snapchatters. But that uses a more magazine-like format, driven around text and images, whereas the Snapchat Shows are created to be more akin to mobile TV.

The contract deepens the relationship between Snap and ESPN's parent firm, Walt Disney, and comes just days after Disney announced during its most recent earnings call that the new ESPN-branded streaming service ESPN+ would debut next spring.

"Our shows or our publisher stories or our Our Stories, these are the kinds of things that get a real core, loyal audience and build a [consistent] habit in viewership there", said Sean Mills, head of original content at Snapchat. "Now we have a new medium in mobile video - and there's a huge opportunity for a "SportsCenter' made for mobile, for the next generation of sports fans".

SportsCenter on Snapchat will be hosted by a dynamic roster of ESPN talent, each with his or her own unique point of view, providing diverse perspectives and personality to every show. But the solo-host format means it will lack the snappy interplay among co-anchors of the long-running TV version, which has been a steady generator of sports-media personalities (not to mention a slew of catchphrases).

Snapchat sees the shows as a way to drive more people to its app more often. ESPN will sell ads for the show and has a revenue-sharing agreement with Snap. First, it keeps ESPN's most valuable show relevant by bringing it to fans in a new short format that's very easy to digest on social media. With the expanding lineup, "what we're focused on is loyalty", said Mills, adding that Snapchat's daily active users visit the app on average 25 times per day. It will also be hosted by a rotating group of ESPN talent.
