HPV jab means women only need 3 cervical screens in a lifetime

The researchers emphasize that the huge number of women is on the threshold of the age of the zone from 30 to 60 years - a period when the threat of cervical cancer to the maximum.

In 2016-17 almost 4.5 million women were invited for screening, and almost 3.2 women were tested.

When the new test comes in, women who are not vaccinated should only need seven screenings over their lifetime, according to the QMUL study.

Women who have had the HPV vaccine need to be screened for cervical cancer only three times, a study has indicated. The current test checks for abnormalities first, which is less efficient.

At the moment women aged between 25 and 49 are invited for screening every three years, and when they are aged 50 to 64, every five years.

The findings from the Cancer Research UK-funded study have been published today in the International Journal of Cancer.

Currently, Pap testing involves checking for abnormal cells within the cervix that could, if undetected and untreated, develop into cervical cancer.

"If we can demonstrate that the body mounts an immune response to having an IUD placed, for example, then we could begin investigating whether an IUD can clear a persistent HPV infection in a clinical trial", said co-author Laila Muderspach, chair of obstetrics and gynecology at the Keck School.

It is now being rolled out across the NHS, and by December 2019 all women in England will be able to get it. After that, they are invited every five years until 64.

They also calculated the impact of the HPV vaccination programme, which has since 2008, has been offered to schoolgirls aged 11 to 13.

The researchers highlighted that the initial cohort vaccinated under the immunisation programme was now reaching the age of their first cervical screening invite.

The Cancer Research UK-funded team from Queen Mary University of London (QMUL), found that three screens at 30, 40 and 55 would offer the same benefit to vaccinated women as the 12 lifetime screens now offered in England.

Lead author Dr Rebecca Landy, medical statistician at the universty's Wolfson Institute, said: 'Our results confirm that even in unvaccinated women, screening intervals can be safely lengthened with the introduction of HPV testing with cytology triage, compared to cytology testing'.

'This decision would free up resources for where they are needed most.

"The change in the screening system is a unique opportunity to reassess how often women are invited for cervical screens during their lifetimes", he added. The new programme called HPV primary testing is set to be introduced in England by December 2019. The current vaccine Gardasil protects against HPV 6, 11, 16 and 18 which are responsible for 70% of all cervical cancer. Both IUD users and those with cervical cancer, which is the fourth most common form of cancer in women, have been identified.

"Cervical screening can be quite an uncomfortable experience, but I'm forever grateful that the test spotted my cancer early".
