In terror-wary NYC, security tight for Thanksgiving parade

New York City's world-famous Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, a traditional event that dates back to 1924, was held here on Thursday amid tight security. The Vapor Wake dogs look for mobile threats and can detect the "thermal plumes left behind in a person's wake", Paul Hammond, the president of Vapor Wake training program VWK9 LLC, told Rolling Stone.

The dogs, which are trained to avoid the distractions of large crowds and loud noises typical of large events, can sense explosive particles and even firearm residue in this wake, Wired reported.

A host of Broadway musicals are set to perform during the 91st Annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, which is broadcast on NBC and CBS November 23 beginning at 9 AM ET.

"There will be a cop on every block", said NYPD Chief of Patrol Terence Monahan.

A balloon has blown into a tree and popped at the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, but no one was injured.

Organised by the Macy's department-store chain, the parade took place on the streets of Manhattan and was expected to draw 3.5 million people along the entire route, Efe news agency.

The NYPD used eight Vapor Wake dogs at the Thanksgiving Day parade a year ago, and police departments across the country have increasingly relied on them to screen large gatherings.

A posting previous year in an English-language magazine of the Islamic State group, which took credit for the October 31 truck attack that killed eight people, mentioned the Thanksgiving parade as "an excellent target".

New York's mayor said there were no credible threats or specific threats surrounding the parade, but after a man deliberately drove a truck onto a bike path on Manhattan's west side last month, killing eight people, the NYPD wasn't taking any chances.

Officers with assault weapons and portable radiation detectors circulated among the crowds, sharpshooters were stationed on rooftops and sand-filled city sanitation trucks were positioned as traffic barriers. It starts at 9 a.m. Thursday on NBC.

Entertainment Tonight host Kevin Frazier and correspondent Keltie Knight host the annual event, which also continues to noon.
