IndiGo Aircraft Hits Wild Boar on Runway During Take-off, All Passengers Safe

IndiGo officials said the pilots saw the boar straying on to the runway but could not abort the take-off at that stage, The Times of India reported.

Vizag: IndiGo Plane carrying 150 passengers was bound for Hyderabad had a narrow escape after a wild boar nearly collided with the aircraft that was taking off. IndiGo officials confirmed that the pilot saw the boar, but it was too late to abort take-off. The flight was on its way from Vizag and had 150 passengers along with four crew members on board. In the panic that followed, the pilot informed the Air Traffic Controller and took to the air nevertheless to avoid a fire since the tank was full. In what can be termed a miraculous escape, the disaster was averted after a wild boar hit the flight mid-takeoff. "If a wild boar could sneak into the runway, even a terrorist also could gain entry under the cover of darkness", he said and sought immediate clearing of bushes.

But the pilot could not land the flight immediately, as the rear wheel was damaged in the run-in and failed to retract. Landing the plane with a full tank of fuel would also have been risky. "As per the standard operating procedures, the captain immediately reported the matter to the Air Traffic Control and made a decision to hold over Vizag", the airline said in the statement.

The Visakhapatnam-Hyderabad flight, which took off at 10.30 p.m., came back to the runway. "After runway inspection, the pilot carried out a precautionary landing at Vizag airport after 45 minutes for necessary inspection". "This should come as an eye-opener for authorities and they should improve the security at the airport", Kumar said.Authorities should immediately take steps of removing debris, bushes and other unsafe factors on the airport premises, Kumar said.Speaking to TOI, Vizag airport director G Prakash Reddy said they have already written to the Airport Security Unit regarding the insufficient number of staff.
