Nintendo and Universal in talks for animated Mario Bros. movie

Nintendo and Universal in talks for animated Mario Bros. movie

Earlier this morning, the Wall Street Journal published strong rumors stating Nintendo and Universal Pictures' Illumination Entertainment (Despicable Me, The Secret Life of Pets) are close to securing an agreement on making an animated Super Mario Bros movie. Polygon has reached out to both Nintendo and Illumination for comment.

Only one film is now planned according to sources close to the talks.

Of course, that adaptation of Super Mario Bros. was a live-action film and not an animated feature.

WSJ reports that talks have been complicated by Nintendo's desire to be heavily involved in the filmmaking process. Mario creator and video game guru Shigeru Miyamoto has been a part of these talks with Illumination, and will likely be a producer for the film.

While its live-action status did afford us the chance to watch the great Bob Hoskins prance around the screen as Mario, the movie was plagued with freaky departures from the elements of the Mario franchise we commonly associate with the beloved gaming series.

Nintendo and Universal have an existing relationship that will see theme parks based on the video game giant's renowned properties opened in Universal Studios' locations in Japan, Florida and California. Dennis Hopper played the villainous King Koopa. It was a critical and commercial dud, however.

There's nothing further to report at this time, but we'll keep you informed as updates roll in.
