Papa John's apologizes for comments about National Football League player protests

"The statements made on our earnings call were describing the factors that impact our business and we sincerely apologize to anyone that thought they were divisive".

In addition to allowing itself to be perceived as opposed to players' efforts to highlight racial injustice, Papa John's has been drawn into Cowboys owner Jerry Jones's feud with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and other owners.

This turned out to be a bad PR move for them as it started an all-out Pizza war, leading Schnatter's net worth to drop $70 million between the time he made the comments a few days after.

A third tweet from the company said that going forward, it will work with the National Football League and its players to "find a positive way forward", and is open to ideas from all, "except neo-nazis" - throwing in a middle finger emoji.

Papa John's Apologizes for 'Divisive' Comments

Many fans on both sides of the national anthem protests debate have took to boycotting the NFL - with some saying they refuse to watch another game until Colin Kaepernick is signed, while others say they'll continue to boycott the NFL until the anthem protests end. Open to ideas from all. That didn't go over well with Papa J, who helped write the tweets according to the company's Twitter feed.

In a three-tweet mea culpa, the Louisville-based company did a 180 and said it supported players' right to protest. "Except neo-nazis - [middle-finger emoji] those guys".

"Is this supposed to be Woke Papa John's Pizza?" tweeted @danibostick.

Papa John's statement on Twitter comes amid a sales slump for the pizza chain. The controversy kicked off after San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick took a knee during the national anthem a year ago, inspiring other players to engage in similar forms of protest to recognize racial inequality and police brutality.
