Rashford Responds To Brazilian Ronaldo's Comments

Speaking before England host Brazil in a friendly at Wembley on Tuesday, Rashford said he was a five-year-old spectator at Old Trafford when Real knocked United out 6-5 on aggregate in the quarter-finals.

What is less known is that there was someone else watching on at Old Trafford that spring evening who would go on to have an impact on English football, less significantly but in its own way also an absorbing tale. Ronaldo, not quite at his Barcelona peak, but still coming off the back of dominating the 2002 World Cup, scored a brilliant hat-trick.

The Brazilian forward is known as one of the greatest players to ever grace a football field, and the Manchester United forward took the time to explain how he has tried to copy Ronaldo, and how his game has been affected by him in the best possible way. "When you're young, you watch clips of the best players in the world and try to emulate them, so it just tends to happen naturally".

Rashford says: "He was a top player who won a lot of things, so when he's saying good things about you it really stands out".

"He always played free", the England striker said simply. "I will always remember it". No matter where he was playing, he went out there and expressed himself.

"It's incredible really that he's been a player who's been able to dip under the radar as we think so much of him, not only his ability, but his mentality and his maturity", Southgate told British media. However, there have been mitigating circumstances.

Rashford is one of numerous players that fit into the category of young, exciting talents, although he has more experience than many others in that group.

He has made a decent fist of it so far as the rising star for both United and England.

It was the main reason that Rashford watched him so much during his youth.

Rashford lined up alongside Romelu Lukaku that afternoon and it bodes well for the player's prospects at global level that he appears comfortable in a two-man frontline. "The more we do it the better we'll become at it, so it's just about familiarising ourselves with positions and responsibilities".

The transition from watching to playing has been seamless for Rashford.

"The four games we have got building up to it now are going to be important for us". No wonder Rashford will indeed be living the dream when he faces the five-time world champions Brazil tonight.

Ronaldo, who is widely regarded as one of the best forwards in history, scored 62 times in 98 appearances for Brazil - helping the South American nation win two World Cups in the process.
