Shawn Mendes, Eminem and U2 among winners at MTV Europe Music Awards

Eminem opened the ceremony with his new song "Walk on Water", featuring Beyonce, though Skylar Grey filled on vocals for the live performance.

In a first for the EMAs, which were created in 1994, MTV announced categories stripped of gender in a bid to "break barriers".

Notable performances included local London grime star Stormzy, who took to the stage poking out of the sunroof of a police auto, and Travis Scott, who entered standing atop what looked like a floating hawk.

Cuban-American singer Camila Cabello was honoured with the best pop prize, while Coldplay snatched the best rock award.

The Irish band dedicated the award to label boss Chris Blackwell of Island records, who signed them nearly 40 years ago. Despite receiving six nominations - the most of any artist - Taylor Swift failed to win any awards.

Louis Tomlinson, from the boy band One Direction, landed the best United Kingdom and Ireland act.

Thirty Seconds to Mars were named best alternative.

Irish rockers U2 were presented with a "Global Icon" award, in recognition of their decades at the top of the music industry.

U2 performed in London's Trafalgar Square the night before the MTV awards, along with DJ Guetta, to a crowd of 7,000 who won free tickets in a ballot.

The leading the main music award Europe MTV EMA this year was singer Rita Ora (26).

On stage she slipped in a shorter version that cut off at the knee and during her performance, Ora switched into a black number that highlighted her abs.

The Detroit rapper also took the award for "Best Hip Hop", an honour which he appeared to find slightly baffling.
