StarCraft II Is Now Free To Play

As promised, StarCraft 2 has just gone free to play. While it includes the single-player campaign for Wings of Liberty, Legacy of the Void, Heart of the Swarm, and others will come at a price.

You also get access to all multiplayer units in the Unranked Multiplayer and Custom game modes.

As an extra thank you to current Starcraft II players, you'll recieve a unique Eidolon Ghost skin and three portraits commemorating founder status in the game.

As Blizzard announced back on November 5, the entire Wings of Liberty campaign is available in the just-unleashed free-to-play version (v4.0) of StarCraft II, and the unranked multiplayer ladder is also freely accessible from the get-go.

If you do not have a Battle.net account, you will need to sign up for one using the registration page.

If you've never played StarCraft II, you really need to check this out, unless you truly detest strategy games.

Blizzard has also introduced a "welcome" experience for newbie players with version 4.0 of StarCraft II, which allows you to select your level of RTS experience, with more guidance and introductory videos on hand for true novices.

When it comes to Ranked play, you will be able to access this only after you have attained 10 'First Wins of the Day.' These wins have to be either in Versus AI matches or Unranked multiplayer. From there the client will complete the Starcraft II installation. Interested players can check out the game at the official "Starcraft 2" website.

However, if you bought Wings of Liberty before it became free, Blizzard will send you a code to download a digital copy of Heart of the Swarm free of charge.

Meanwhile, you can play co-op mode, with free co-op commanders up to level 5 - and that includes Terran commander combo Mira Han and Matt Horner, who are debuting today as part of the free-to-play launch. All you have to do is log in between November 8 and December 8 to claim it through the Battle.net client (there should be a little gift icon in the upper-right corner).
