Tesla is a 'hotbed for racist behavior,' class-action lawsuit claims

Marcus Vaughn, the Tesla employee in question, stated that the production floor is a "hotbed for racist behavior".

In the legal complaint, Vaughn v. Tesla Inc.in the Superior Court of California, alleges that Tesla workers, including managers, routinely used derogatory and discriminatory language against African-American workers.

The harassment centers around Vaughn and other co-workers being called the "N" word by co-workers and supervisors, and then when they complained about it in writing to management and to CEO Elon Musk, either nothing was done or they faced "backlash", the suit claims. He complained to Tesla's human resources department and was sacked in October for "not having a positive attitude".

A few months into the job, he was sacked for "not having a positive attitude".

The former Tesla employee is now seeking unspecified damages as well as an order for Tesla to implement policies to prevent and correct harassment.

Vaughn stated that although the company is considered an innovative company and the pioneer of the electric vehicle revolution, its standard operating procedure "is pre-Civil rights era race discrimination".

The Palo Alto-based company employs around 33,000 employees, but has so far shied away from releasing the diversity statistics.

Vaughn's complaint also quotes allegedly features a letter from CEO Elon Musk, where he tells his employees to be "thick-skinned and accept that apology".

The growing amount of discrimination claims against Tesla come as the company is also facing a unionization campaign from the United Auto Workers (UAW).

Owen Diaz and his son, Demetric, left to right, talk about their lawsuit against Tesla at their attorney's office in Oakland, California, on Thursday, 21 September, 2017.

The email was sent to employees in May.

"In fairness, if someone is a jerk to you, but sincerely apologizes, it is important to be thick-skinned and accept that apology", Tesla's C.E.O wrote in an email. "Sometimes these things happen unintentionally, in which case you should apologize".

"Tesla is not doing enough".

"When you have a diverse workforce, you need to take steps to make sure everyone feels welcome in that workforce", he said.

The lawsuit is at least the third filed this year against Tesla alleging racial discrimination at its Fremont, California, factory.
