Texas State University Suspends Greek Life After 'Tragic Death' of Fraternity Pledge

At about 11:35 a.m. Monday, Nov. 13, The San Marcos Police Department was dispatched to Millennium Apartments at 1651 Post Road.

A Texas State sophomore and Phi Psi brother was found dead after a pledging incident.

During a press conference on Tuesday, authorities said it is too early to tell if Ellis' death is a result of hazing.

According to a preliminary investigation, alcohol might have been a factor in Ellis's death, but toxicology results from his autopsy are still pending, police said.

According to the The University Star, the university's student paper, Ellis died in his sleep November 12 following his fraternity's initiation.

Ellis was a business major at Texas State, according to his Facebook profile and the University Star, the school's student newspaper.

University President Denise Trauth says the chapters won't be reinstated until a review is done of the entire fraternity and sorority system on campus.

Trauth added that she was suspending all Greek fraternity and sorority activities while the university completes a review of the Greek system. "Phi Kappa Psi will continue to work closely with the TXSU administration and law enforcement during their review of this matter, and have advised all members to cooperate fully".
