'Transracial' man born white feels like he's Filipino

'Transracial' man born white feels like he's Filipino

According to USA TODAY, Ja Du was born as a white male named Adam, but after growing up enjoying Filipino food, events, and overall culture, he now identifies as Filipino.

Ja Du, who drives a Filipino Tuk Tuk for everyday use, told WTSP that he grew up feeling like he had a special connection to Filipino culture, but at the time of the interview the Florida man had not told yet his family about his identity, because he anxious they would not understand, especially after Dolezal faced ridicule. The term once referred only to someone (or a couple) of a one race adopting a child of another, but now it's becoming associated with someone born of one race who identifies with another. As a "Filipino", Ja Du would be eligible for certain preferences and privileges that a white male would not be.

"Whenever I'm around the music, around the food, I feel like I'm in my own skin", he told WTSP.

If you're thinking this sounds familiar, you might remember the story of Rachel Dolezal.

She has since claimed to identify as "trans-black" and has published a memoir titled In Full Colour.

She was forced to step down after it was revealed she was a white woman.

A white Florida man now claims he's Filipino, much like Rachel Dolezal and others who declare themselves as transracial. Now, we are finding out this community of people who identify as another race is growing.

Dr. Stacey Scheckner is a licensed psychologist with a B.A. from Washington University, plus M.A. and doctorate from Florida State. She has, however, worked with clients who otherwise desired different physical features.

"I think if you're unhappy with who you are and you change yourself for the better and that makes you happy, you know, go for it". The more knowledge you have of yourself, the happier you can be, ' she said.

As well as changing his name, Ja has also started driving around in a purple Tuk Tuk - a type of small motorised rickshaw that is popular in Southern Asia, especially in the Philippines. I believe you should be you and I don't think your identity should be who you are. "All they want to do is throw themselves into that culture and celebrate it", Dr. Schneckner told WTSP.

But, with someone making such drastic changes, she does think they should speak to a professional.

"I work with a lot, in my 15 years, a lot of transgender people" she said.

Ja Du's transracial identity is not the first case to garner media attention. He is also transsexual and is considering changing his gender as well.

Ja Du a Pinay told reporters that he really enjoys the culture of the Filipinos and all things related.
