YouTube says it's taken steps to remove terrorism-related content

The radical American born cleric was killed in 2011 by a US drone strike in Yemen, but his teachings, which encourage violence, have lived on in tens of thousands of videos online. The same search on Sunday (12 November), however, yielded just 18,600 videos, most of which were news reports, documentaries and scholarly material about his life and death.

YouTube has removed thousands of propaganda videos from late al-Qaeda-linked cleric Anwar al-Awlaki amid mounting pressure from governments and counterterrorism advocates.

Despite his death in a USA drone strike in 2011, Awlaki's legacy lived on with more than 70,00o videos accessible on YouTube.

According to the Times, YouTube now automatically flags Awlaki's videos and human reviewers intermediate when an Awlaki lecture is uploaded to the site.

According to The New York Times, YouTube has wiped its archives clean of Anwar al-Awlaki, the radical cleric whose videos reportedly served as online grooming to a number of us terrorists, including the shooter of the Orlando nightclub in 2016.

However, the policy will not affect news clips or educational videos about terrorism. He was also cited as an influence in numerous terrorist attacks over the years, including the ones at Fort hood, the Boston Marathon and San Bernardino among others.

YouTube's efforts to block Awlaki's online messages come as social media sites have come under scrutiny to go further to remove terrorist-connected accounts and jihadist content.

In 2015, internet giant Google said that YouTube was so inundated that staff couldn't filter all terror-related content, complicating the struggle to halt the publication of terrorist propaganda and hostage videos.

The three websites have all revealed that Russian actors used their platforms during the 2016 presidential campaign to spread propaganda and pose as American voters.
