YouTube will block ads against creepy videos targeted at children

Recently, reports by Mashable, the New York Times and Buzzfeed have exposed how the platform shows disturbing videos depicting Disney characters and popular super heroes engaging in violent or criminal behavior on the family-friendly YouTube Kids channel. For kids, there are millions of cartoons available, but not all of them are showing kid-appropriate content. Parents, regulators, advertisers and law enforcement have issues regarding the issue that there are no limitations on YouTube. The company has also created policies that will age-restrict videos that have kid-friendly characters dealing with mature themes or adult humor. The report highlighted that commentators were making sexual comments or "inviting the children to talk" in videos where young kids were engaged in activities like gymnastics. The same channel shows Mickey Mouse kidnapping a child and Sleeping Beauty's Maleficent pregnant in a bikini on a beach cuddling up to a shirtless, sleeping Spiderman.

Millions of monetized views later, YouTube is finally taking action.

Other videos show adults placing children in disturbing, uncomfortable situations. The videos were posted by verified account, Mr. Tisha, and had almost two million subscribers.

This month ablog post from tech journalist James Bridle sparked press scrutiny of YouTube's vast, unregulated void of weird videos aimed at children. YouTube has adopted a five prong approach to the problem, and said it has scaled up resources around these measures.

YouTube are expanding their strict policy guidelines against child endangerment around removing content featuring minors that may be endangering a child "even if that was not the uploader's intent". The company announced they will be using technology to flag problematic videos more quickly and will remove ads from "inappropriate" videos targeting families. In the last week, YouTube terminated over 50 channels and removed thousands of videos under these guidelines.

The post also reassured users that the company is still removing ads from videos with family-entertainment characters acting violently or offensively.

Following a Verge story revealing examples of predatory comments on videos of minors, YouTube announced on Wednesday that they will turn off comments entirely on videos where the video-streaming detects predatory behavior. To help better understand how to treat this content, YouTube will be growing the number of experts it works with, and doubling the number of Trusted Flaggers it partners with in this area.
