Around the NHL: Simmonds leads Flyers as they double up Oilers

The Philadelphia Flyers came to Alberta knowing they needed to do whatever was necessary to win.

They now have a two-game winning streak for the second time this season.

The Edmonton Oilers poor play on home ice continued Wednesday night at Rogers Place as they were beaten 4-2 by the Philadelphia Flyers.

Brossoit made 29 saves while Elliott made 23 stops.

The Flyers held the Oilers to just 25 shots in what was a grinding sort of game.

He also came up with a pair of saves in the final 10 minutes of the third.

Elliott said boring, winning hockey is just fine with him.

"Yeah, we talked about that".

"We're heading in the right direction", said Pouliot, who has those two goals on the season along with eight assists.

He scored a goal and added two assists in Vancouver's 3-0 victory over Carolina on Monday while recording a game-high four blocked shots and helping goaltender Jacob Markstrom earn his first National Hockey League shutout.

More importantly, Weal's goal came about five minutes after the Oilers jumped on the board first with a shorthanded tally when Connor McDavid stripped Couturier of the puck and led a 2-on-1 the other way, resulting in Leon Draisaitl's goal that gave Edmonton a 1-0 lead. Weal tapped in a feed from Sean Couturier, ending a slick passing play that was started by Giroux.

However, it now appears that, barring an unforeseen injury, another defenseman will draw the short straw, especially with Pouliot helping the Canucks shine at home, where they will play 10 of 13 games in December, but are a modest 5-5-3. This time, they didn't let it go to waste on the NHL's worst penalty kill entering Wednesday.

Weal had a different perspective on the goal.

"Our forecheck was really good tonight in the neutral zone", Weal said. "It's not been for a lack of hard work and creating chances". Shots were 13-7 Flyers after the first. Weise's 25-footer trickled through Brossoit's legs at 14:45 of the second.

Pouliot, an Estevan, Saskatchewan, native who languished mainly in the minors after the Penguins drafted him eighth overall in 2012, is also producing points - a rare feat for most Canucks defensemen in recent seasons - and preventing goals. "There were a lot of improvements, a couple of things that I wanted to make sure I did tonight, and did. The desperation level went up a little bit in the third but obviously that's not enough", McLellan said.

With 5:15 left in the second, Weise, sent in on a crafty pass by Claude Giroux (two assists), scored off the rush as he fired a shot from the high slot past Laurent Brossoit, who had allowed five goals in each of his previous two games.

"It definitely feels good. Getting contributions from everyone, it's going to be huge if we want to keep stringing some wins together". Michael Raffl converted a breakaway to make it 3-1 with 15:54 to go.

Edmonton pulled to within one on Nugent-Hopkins' rebound goal with 6:40 remaining. Then with the Flyers hanging onto a 3-2 lead with two minutes to go, McDavid sped in on the right side and got off his only shot of the game, but Elliott made the pad save to preserve the lead.

Simmonds put it away with an empty-netter with 39 seconds left.

NOTES: The Flyers and Oilers wrapped up their season series. Backstrom hadn't scored since October 14 in Philadelphia.

The Flyers placed D Brandon Manning and G Michal Neuvirth on injured reserve hours before the game, and they recalled D TJ Brennan and G Alex Lyon from their AHL affiliate, the Lehigh Valley Phantoms. Oilers G Cam Talbot, now on injured reserve, is expected to start skating later this week.
