Centura co-parent Catholic Health Initiatives to merge

After a year of negotiations, Dignity Health and Catholic Health Initiatives have signed a definitive agreement to merge operations.

The merger between Englewood, Colorado-based CHI and San Francisco-based Dignity Health will result in a new health system that includes 139 hospitals and 700 care sites and employs about 159,000 people and more than 25,000 doctors and clinicians.

The new organization plans to establish its corporate headquarters in Chicago and operate under a new name that will be chosen in the second half of 2018.

The merger is not expected to impact local employees, given there is no geographical overlap between the two combining organizations. In the meantime, all existing medical facilities will continue operating under their respective Dignity and CHI names.

Dignity CEO Lloyd Dean and CHI's CEO Kevin Lofton will lead the new organization together as CEOs, each with specific responsibilities and decision-making authority. "We foresee an incredible opportunity to expand each organization's best practices to respond to the evolving healthcare environment and deliver high-quality, cost-effective care".

Advancement of digital technologies like stroke robots and Google Glass. Dignity Health has medical facilities in California, Nevada and Arizona.

The proposed merger is the most recent example of consolidation in the health care sector, which has been on the rise for several years - prompting worry that less competition means higher prices and fewer choices for consumers. The program's objective is to be available at almost 150 CHI and Dignity Health and care centers across the USA, serving approximately 12 million patients annually, Dignity said.

The merger which is still subject to federal, state and church approval, is expected to go through in the second half of 2018.
