China urges calm as N.Korea rattles sabres

The article - reminiscent of USA public service announcements made at the height of the Cold War - comes in the week that the US and South Korea take part in their largest ever join military drill, which has been declared by Kim Jong Un's rogue state as an "open, all-out provocation" that could push the Korean Peninsula to the "brink of war".

The US flew two B-1B supersonic bombers over Korea on Thursday, the second sortie carried out here this week by the Guam-based aircraft, a defense official said.

But North Korea has a problem there.

The United States will deploy B-1B Lancer strategic bomber aircraft to Korea on Wednesday as part of a combined air combat training, a defense source said.

A state-run newspaper in northeastern China's Jilin city, which is near the border with North Korea, published a full page of "common sense" advice that was meant to keep its readers alive in the case of attack.

Lee also said that the South and China have the same position on the North Korean nuclear issue.

A South Korean ruling party lawmaker said Thursday that President Moon Jae-in and Chinese President Xi Jinping share an understanding that suspending North Korea's nuclear and missile development and joint South Korea-U.S. military exercises at the same time is the most realistic way to start resolving the standoff.

Lavrov said he had passed on Pyongyang's desire for direct talks to US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson when the two met on the sidelines of a conference in Vienna on Thursday.

North Korea regularly uses its state media to threaten the United States and its allies.

On Wednesday, the U.S. dispatched a B-1B jet to Korea for a joint training exercise with several warplanes, including F-22 and F-35 stealth fighters.

Nauert said North Korea was "not showing any interest in sitting down and having any kind of serious conversations when they continue to fire off ballistic missiles". He said Trump was prepared to take action against North Korea but was working to convince China, Russia and others to do more to press Pyongyang to get it to give up its weapons programs.

The warplanes simulated land strikes at a military field near South Korea's eastern coast.

North Korea regularly threatens to destroy South Korea and the United States and says its weapons programmes are necessary to counter USA aggression. Some analysts and diplomats hope his visit could spark a UN-led effort to defuse tensions.
