Eating cheese daily may be good for your health

A recent study showed people who eat small amounts of cheese every day are less likely to develop heart disease than those who don't eat it at all.

Chinese researchers conducted a meta-analysis of 15 studies from Europe and the USA, which monitored the health effects of cheese consumption in more than 200,000 people.

While low-fat dairy products are considered more favorable than high-fat dairy products by federal nutrition guidelines, the meta-analysis found limited evidence that high-fat dairy could increase the risk of CVD, CHD, or stroke compared to low-fat dairy.

They found moderate cheese eaters, who consumed about 40 grams a day, were 14 percent less likely to develop heart disease and had 10 percent lower risk of stroke.

It's important to understand that the relationship between higher cheese consumption and lower risk of heart disease and stroke is U-shaped rather than linear.

The findings after this research review were definitely different than expected. This basically means that higher quantities of cheese aren't necessarily better.

The scientists report that these effects were strongest among participants who consumed around 40 grams, or 1.41 ounces, of cheese every day.

Researchers from China and the Netherlands sought to learn more about how long-term cheese consumption can affect a person's risk for heart disease. It could be that people who eat cheese on a daily basis are healthier overall, or have more disposable income and higher socioeconomic statuses.

While specific types of cheese weren't mentioned, high-fat cheese did get a break.

As noted in the study, cheese is also a good source of vitamins, minerals, and protein, which also may be "cardiovascular protective properties". Cheese also contains conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), an unsaturated fatty acid that may increase the amount of of HDL "good" cholesterol and decrease "bad" LDL levels. With the average American consuming 42.5 grams of food each day, you may find yourself eating less cheese if you want the maximum benefits. "But on the upside, a bit of cheese on a cracker doesn't sound unreasonable".

Stewart was not involved in the study.

If you're a cheese lover, you will welcome the results of this new study with open arms.

"We're always are searching for ways to minimize heart disease and reduce atherosclerosis", he says.
