EU's top diplomat warns Trump against changing Jerusalem's status

Referring to the two-state solution, she said: "A negotiated two-state solution, which fulfils the aspirations of both sides, is the only realistic way of bringing the lasting peace and security that both Israelis and Palestinians deserve".

In remarks to the press on the sidelines of the meetings, Germany's acting foreign minister, Sigmar Gabriel, said any unilateral USA recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital would inflame Middle East tensions.

"We believe that any action that would undermine these efforts must absolutely be avoided".

Late Monday, Mogherini warned about the possible consequences and "repercussions" which the decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital might trigger.

On Monday, during a phone conversation with Jordan's Foreign Minister Safadi on the possible USA announcement on the status of Jerusalem, Mogherini declared: "Since early this year, the European Union was clear in its expectation that there can be reflection on the consequences that any decision or unilateral action affecting Jerusalem's status could have".

Trump has also vowed to move the US embassy in Israel to Jerusalem, though he is expected to temporarily punt on that move on Wednesday and sign a waiver keeping the facility in Tel Aviv for at least another six months.

The move may also strain relations with Turkey, a strong economic and military ally to the U.S. Turkey's president said his country could cut diplomatic ties with Israel if President Donald Trump goes through with the decision.

Trump was expected to make the announcement Monday, but postponed it amid a wave of public calls and private pleas from world leaders.

She said the European Union and its member states would "continue to respect the worldwide consensus on Jerusalem embodied in, inter alia, UNSCR 478, including on the location of their diplomatic representations until the final status of Jerusalem is resolved".
