Farenthold sexual harassment allegations to be investigated by House ethics panel

The House Ethics Committee on Thursday opened investigations into Reps.

The Committee announced the formation of an investigative subcommittee following an Office of Congressional Ethics review into the matter, which began in September 2015.

New information "about the nature of the settlement between the parties" prompted the investigation of the matter, the Committee on Ethics said.

Farenthold had denied the allegations, maintaining in the court proceeding that Greene was sacked for poor performance, according to reports.

"Over the last two weeks, more information has been disclosed about the nature of the settlement between the parties", the committee's two top members, Republican Susan Brooks of IN and Democrat Ted Deutch of Florida, said IN a statement. "In addition, both Representative Farenthold and the Complainant have publicly expressed an interest in increased transparency in this matter".

The committee is chaired by Republican Rep. Susan Brooks of Indiana.

The case came to light again this week when Farenthold acknowledged that the settlement was paid out from taxpayers funds, which he agreed to repay.

"Once all the facts are released, I'm confident this matter will once and for all be settled and resolved", he said. She alleged in a 2014 federal lawsuit that she was sexually harassed and fired soon after complaining of a hostile work environment.

Capitol Hill has been rocked in recent weeks by allegations of sexual misconduct by lawmakers, and outrage that public money may have been paid to settle harassment suits against members of Congress. It added that while Farenthold has cooperated in the investigation so far, the probe has been "significantly delayed by difficulties in obtaining live testimony" from other key witnesses.

The Ethics Committee said it would investigate the claim and other allegations that Farenthold made "inappropriate statements to other members of his official staff".
