FBI Director Wray Defends Agency Before Lawmakers

Wray told the House Judiciary Committee that in his experience, the FBI's reputation was "quite good".

Wray became the director four months ago after Comey was sacked by Trump, and the new director has tried to keep a low profile and steer the agency clear of the public fights surrounding Trump, Clinton and Comey.

"The FBI that I see is tens of thousands of courageous men and women who are working as hard as they can to keep people that they will never know safe from harm", Wray said before the House Judiciary Committee.

Trump also retweeted reports that a top FBI investigator on special counsel Robert Mueller's team was removed from the investigation for exchanging text messages that could be construed as anti-Trump.

Sanders was likely referring to other comments Wray made about the FBI's employees.

"The FBI I see is reflected in folks like the new class of agents I swore in in Quantico two days ago", he said. "Decent people committed to the highest principles of integrity and professionalism". "We've seen the attacks on legislative oversight, intelligence agencies, the judiciary, journalists".

"It does appear to me that at the very least the FBI's reputation as an impartial, non-political agency has come into question", said Chairman Bob Goodlatte, R-Va. "Now do we make mistakes? We hope to hear from you today about an action plan for making sure this never happens again".

He continued on to say that the Federal Bureau of Investigation makes "mistakes" just "like everybody who is human makes mistakes". But he conceded that agents do make mistakes, adding that there are processes in place to hold them accountable.

Wray predecessor, James Comey, has said that Trump asked him for his loyalty and asked him to halt an FBI investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn, who pleaded guilty Friday to lying to the FBI investigators over his contacts with former Russian ambassador to the United States.
