Google Blocks YouTube Access From Amazon's Streaming Devices

Google Blocks YouTube Access From Amazon's Streaming Devices

You may remember that back in September, Google pulled YouTube support for Amazon's Echo Show, with Google claiming that the speaker's version of the YouTube app original app violated its terms of service and lacked a number of important features.

We've been trying to reach agreement with Amazon to give consumers access to each other's products and services, but Amazon doesn't carry Google products like Chromecast and Google Home, doesn't make Prime Video available for Google Cast users, and last month stopped selling some of Nest's latest products.

Amazon and Google are not getting along right now, and that rocky relationship has resulted in YouTube being pulled from Amazon Echo Show and Fire TV devices.

Mountain View, California-based Google isn't the only competitor that has seen its products blocked from Amazon's site. In November, Amazon managed to add YouTube support back onto the Echo Show, but that it was a more basic web-based interface. Amazon eventually got YouTube back for the customers, but Google has doubled down and will be stripping it away entirely. "We hope we can reach an agreement to resolve these issues".

In a statement to Engadget, the company said it has blocked YouTube from the Echo Show immediately, and that it will block YouTube support for the Fire TV devices on January 1, 2018.

While it would definitely be better for consumers if Google and Amazon worked together, it looks like it won't happen anytime soon.

According to The Verge via a YouTube spokesperson, Google is nixing support for both the Echo Show and Fire TV, the latter being a major blow for Amazon. You'll see a warning appear starting today, however, that support will end in coming weeks. All things being equal, it stands to reason that the move will hurt Amazon a lot more than it will hurt Google. YouTube used to be available to our shared customers on Echo Show. Plus, Fire TV is a platform where a user is more likely to watch YouTube as part of their entertainment roster.
