Gurgaon Fortis 'overbilling': Haryana govt says hospital guilty of negligence

The father of 7-year-old girl Adya who died from dengue 15 days after being admitted to the famous Fortis Hospital in Gurgaon has alleged that the hospital offered him money to end his campaign against the hospital, which he had launched after Adya's death.

In perhaps the first case of its kind, the Haryana health department on Wednesday indicted Fortis Medical Research Institute at Gurugram of medical protocol in the death of seven-yearold Adya. Haryana Health minister Anil Vij said that the fact-finding committee headed by additional director general of health services (ADGHS) Rajiv Wadhera, has also written to the Indian Medical Association (IMA) for stringent action against the hospital.

The above action has been taken keeping in view the report of the Committee that has found irregularities in functioning of the hospital administration.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Vij said, "In simple language, this is as good as a murder". The parents of the girl have also registered their statements before the Committee. Her condition worsened to "dengue shock syndrome" and she was moved to the ventilator.

The committee had taken note of the medicines and treatment that was given to the girl along with the bills and reasons for her death. The hospital also did not follow the Medical Council of India's (MCI) guidelines to prescribe generic medicines and billed the family for "costly" branded medicines, he added.

"The death of the girl happened due to not following the LAMA protocol, which is the Leave Against Medical Advice".

Apart from this, Fortis has also found to be in violation of its Memorandum of Understanding with the Haryana government for the land that it has leased, Vij told television channels after the briefing. Further, the hospital violated rules of blood bank by overcharging for the platelets.

He also that the hospital is required to provide healthcare at cheaper rates to 20% of its customers drawn from the economically weaker sections according to an agreement it has with the government.

"Patient Adya Singh was admitted at FMRI on August 31 at 11:16 am with an initial diagnosis of severe dengue".

Addressing a press conference here, Vij shared the findings of the three-member committee set up to look into the charges by Adya's family on negligence in treatment and overcharging.
