Has Rafael Palmeiro lost his mind?

Has Rafael Palmeiro lost his mind?

I've taken care of myself really well.

Rafael Palmeiro hasn't played in the major league since 2005, but now the 53 year old is confident that he can make it back to the MLB.

Palmeiro is one of only five players in MLB history with 500 home runs and 3,000 hits, though he was removed from the the Baseball Hall of Fame ballot after just four years after not receiving enough votes to remain on the ballot. "Everything feels better than when I played".

Palmeiro told The Athletic he doesn't want to play in the minor leagues. Later that season, he was suspended for 10 days for testing positive for the potent anabolic steroid stanozolol. He famously spoke at a Congressional hearing in March 2005 and, under oath, denied using them. "Maybe 12 years later, I can prove to the whole world that I didn't need anything to have a good career", he says. Palmeiro actually played in one game with Patrick in the Atlantic League in 2015 and went 2-for-4 with an RBI.

To this day, Palmeiro has maintained that he's never used performance enhancing drugs.

If Palmiero does end up in the Orioles dugout, his son Preston would be a co-worker of sorts.

Now after so many years away from the game, he wants a chance to prove he can do it clean and prove he never did steroids. Today, a handful of well-known players test positive and serve their suspensions every year and return seamlessly to the clubhouse. Regardless, Orioles general manager Dan Duquette told The Athletic that Palmeiro's comeback would be an "interesting story", adding, "It's like tying your shoes ..." Sure, he's going back into the majors at 53 when the oldest regular position player was Julio Franco, who retired in 2007 at age 49, but he believes in himself.
